List of Building Materials

Here are a list of common building materials used in the construction of buildings

  1. Cement
  2. Concrete/Reinforced Concrete/Precast Concrete/Pre-stressed Concrete
  3. Clay Bricks and Concrete Blocks
  4. Natural Stone (Granite, Sandstone/Limestone/Travertine, Marble/slate)
  5. Ceramic Tiles (Unglazed/Glazed/Homogeneous)
  6. Cement Mortar/Plaster/Screed
  7. Timer and Timer Boards
  8. Metal (Steel, Stainless steel, aluminium, copper)
  9. Plastic (majority uPVC)
  10. Bitumen and Asphalt
  11. Glass
  12. Paints and Varnish (mostly Emulsion paint)
  13. Sealants and Waterproofers

Pre-stressed Concrete has pre-introduced compressive stress to counter tensile stress when load act on a reinforced concreate. It permit larger spans.

Steel has good tension compression and concreate is weak in tension.

Driveways common use materials like (1)interlocking paving blocks (2)asphalt premix paving. For Road Kerbs and Dividers, we use materials like (1)precast concreate (2)brick.

Fencing materials can be any one of these (1)timber (2)mild steel (3)wroguth iron (4)chain-link fence.

Playgrounds need to have fall/shock absorbing flooring to protect the children. The finising can combine with cast-in situ rubber flooring with a top layer of EPDM tiles. For further protection, you can have guard rails/protective barrier. Common materials found on playgrounds are:

  • cargo nets
  • climbing ropes
  • vinyl coated chains

Stairs are structural components of a building because they carry both the dead and live loads. The common types of materials being used for stairs are (1)reinforced concrete (2)steel (3)timber.
